The History of Dynamic Manufacturing -- 1993 to Present

In October of 1990, five former Fisher Scientific employees, Kenneth Kato, Dennis Gibboney, Paul Bauer, Robert Parks and Solomon Jarmell, incorporated under the name Excel Technology Inc. when Fisher Scientific shut down its R&D center in Pittsburgh PA.  Excel Technology, an engineering and product development firm initially found work from local Pittsburgh area companies.  These projects, though highly profitable were extremely cyclical and predicting sales and growth became exceedingly difficult.

Excel Technology needed to find an effective way to attenuate the oscillating cash flow that occurred as projects ended and new ones had not yet started.  Growing the company to reach a steadier critical mass did not appear possible considering the existing Pittsburgh market.  It appeared that either expanding beyond the Pittsburgh area, developing and manufacturing their own product or manufacturing products for someone else might be an appropriate solution to this dilemma.  The answer came in 1992 when after developing and patenting an ultrasonic oxygen sensor for DeVilbiss Health Care, Excel Technology negotiated a manufacturing contract for the product.  As volume for the sensor grew, the five founders decided to form a new manufacturing company, and on January 1, 1993 Dynamic Manufacturing Inc. was incorporated. Dennis Gibboney left Excel Technology to run Dynamic Manufacturing as President, and Sol Jarmell joined him shortly thereafter to supervise sensor production.

For the next nine years the two companies operated separately while exploiting their synergies.  When appropriate, Excel Technology would shepherd products into Dynamic Manufacturing as they were being developed for various clients.  And, when Excel Technology was not fully occupied with client projects, Dynamic Manufacturing would fund Excel Technology to provide manufacturing engineering.  As Dynamic Manufacturing continued to grow with increased sensor volume from DeVilbiss , new temperature controllers for Fisher Scientific,  precision circuit board assemblies for Solid State Measurements, and mass spectrometer electronics assemblies for ABB Extrel, it became apparent that the business would require more management focus.

On January 1, 2001, rather than hiring additional management personnel, a stock transfer deal was struck with Robert Parks, Partner and Director of Mechanical Design Engineering, allowing him to merge Excel Technology with strategic partner Daedalus Design forming Daedalus Excel, a new product development company.  At that point, Kenneth Kato and Paul Bauer joined Dynamic on a full time basis to support and help Dennis Gibboney operate the company.  Paul Bauer took on the role of VP Electronics and Software Development and Ken Kato took the role of VP Business Development along with several other financial management projects.  Additional controllers developed for Fisher Scientific helped to offset losses as oxygen sensors reached the end of their life cycle. This was followed by new controllers and circuit boards for Hix, Berner Air Door, and McKesson Baker.  In recent years, controllers and circuit boards for new products developed by Troemner LLC have offset losses from the closing of Fisher Scientific’s Indiana, PA plant.  Growth and new products from Extrel and additional assembly work from Dynavox have kept Dynamic Manufacturing on a steady growth path.

On December 19, 2005, the assets of Dynamic Manufacturing were sold to The Matric Group.  Other than the retirement of the three owners and a name change to Dynamic Manufacturing LLC, the company continues to operate from its facilities in Harmarville, PA.
